Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Genetics Clinic:

The American Cancer Society estimates that 1.4 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer in 2006, and that 565,000 people will die of the disease. At least half of these cancers are thought to be preventable. Are you at risk of cancer? What can you do about it?

Our Goal:

Our goal is to help patients learn to identify their cancer risks, to reduce their risks, and to promote early detection and treatment of cancer through patient education.

The Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Genetics Clinic at NLCC is designed for people who are interested in learning more about their risk of cancer and what they can do to decrease their risk. Some cancer risks are due to inherited tendencies, while others may be due to occupational exposures, lifestyle issues such as smoking, or other factors that you can control. A Cancer Prevention Evaluation can help you identify your own risk factors and teach you how to change them.

Services provided as part of a Cancer Prevention Evaluation include:

  • A comprehensive evaluation including a detailed history and physical examination by one of our board-certified clinicians
  • A comprehensive written report describing:
    - Cancers for which you are at increased risk and your degree of increased risk
    - Specific factors leading to your increased risk
    - Our personalized recommendations to help you decrease your cancer risk and detect cancer early (while treatment is most effective)
  • A follow-up plan to help you put your recommendations into practice

Factors addressed by our program include:

  • Your medical history, including current and previous health problems affecting cancer risk
  • Family history and genetic factors contributing to increased cancer risk
  • Occupational exposures and other toxic exposures
  • Smoking and other “lifestyle” factors
  • Physical activity and exercise
  • Dietary factors

The Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Genetics Clinic is open to new patients as well as existing NLCC patients! Please call us to arrange an appointment.
